Bingo Fondant Cake
For Bingo Lovers
Making a fondant cake is tricky enough, but to decorate it with art inspired by bingo is a challenge in itself. Wall Street Journal reports that bingo is making a comeback with the rise of hipster culture and food establishments, like tea shops and pizza parlors, are using it as a way to attract customers. Eventually, you’ll have to make this for someone and it’s good to have a recipe lying around that you can use. For the cake base, you can use any of the cake recipes from the previous posts, just make sure to choose one with a strong base as it would have to support the weight of the rolled fondant.
You can opt to make your own fondant or purchase a pre-made one at any baking shop. If you do decide on the latter, you can consult this chart from Wilton.com as a basis for how much you’ll need. After that you’ll need to start rolling your pre-made fondant onto your cake:
· Cover your cake with butter cream icing.
· Your fondant should have the right consistency. You can knead it before putting it on top. If it gets too sticky, you can use confectioner’s sugar to dust your work surface or knead into the dough itself. Lift and move as you roll to keep it from sticking.
· Lift the fondant using your rolling pin and gently position on cake
· Shape the fondant using a smoother. Some would recommend that you use your hands, but I find that it leaves impressions on the fondant. Move the smoother outward and down starting from the middle of the cake top.
· Use the edge of the smoother to mark the base of the cake and trim off the excess using a knife or spatula.
Design:
You can use a basic bingo design using fondant rolled into balls and use concentrated icing color to make bingo balls that would go well with a simple icing bingo card. Make sure to use toothpicks in various areas of the fondant ball before kneading it to get the light and equal color. Or you can embellish on the design and add Greek columns that are easy to make. Get inspiration from Bubble Bonus Bingo’ color scheme and add streaks of blue to get the classic Greek design. Have fun!
